Summary

The Greek island of Kos is relatively small yet still manages to offer two very unique identities. One part of the island offers sun kissed beaches layered with soft golden sand, where bars and restaurants line the streets bustling with British tourists, all designed to let people simply sit down and enjoy the warmth of the sun with a bit of lively atmosphere. Two very popular resorts, Kos Town and Kardemena both fall into this category. However further inland you can find a more ambient and quieter atmosphere for Kos holidays. Intimate beaches are tucked into rugged coves and quaint villages dot the hills. This area is home to small resorts such as Marmari and Masrihari, more known as the ‘real’ Kos and better described as ‘tradition-loving’ than ‘fun-loving’. However, the true beauty of holidays to Kos is that no matter which resort you decide to venture to, you’re never far from neighbouring resorts .

Getting there and getting around

Flights to Kos can be found with most tour operators, in particular Greek specialists such as Olympic Holidays. They can be relatively cheap, especially when booked with self catering packages. Kos International Airport stands 26km south west of Kos Town and is within close proximity to all resorts the island has to offer. Getting around here is very efficient; due to the island being so small a taxi is never too far away, the taxis work on a meter and is government controlled to prevent inflated prices. There is also buses available, however they are said to be quite unreliable in the summer period and can get quite full.

Things to do

Steeped in history, Kos boasts an array of interesting sights to see and places to visit. Holidays in Kos would not be complete if you didn’t admire some of their rich culture. Take the Neratzia Castle for instance, an impressive medieval knight’s castle built in the 1400’s. The castle is home to fascinating sculptures as well as inscriptions of the Hellenestic, Roman, Byzantine and early Christian period. Popular with tourists due to the sheer beauty of the castle even to this day. Kos is also known to be fabulous for clubbing holidays. The 18 to 30 crowd are attracted to the island bringing keen young party animals to Kardemena in search of some serious fun. Kardemena is a lively, non-stop party resort, but it’s also quite charming and you can take time out to relax. However, in high season the resort is full of large groups wanting to stay up all night and sleep all day.

Food and Drink

Kos is one of the greenest islands in Greece so unlike its neighbouring islands, food is locally produced and tourists are likely to see a lot of fresh melons, figs and olives included in local dishes here. Locals in Kos love their seafood, a popular dish is grilled fish sprinkled with herbs, said to be delicious, and you will find this on quite a few menus around town. Kos Town has a fantastic selection of restaurants and bars but for a more traditional meal keep an eye out for one of the tavernas, which tend to be found in the less visited village’s further inland.
